Love this idea Paul, what a cool post! Really resonate with the importance of building something with your hands. A big part of why I studied engineering and still enjoy my work as much as I do today.

Also a reason that I'm enjoying gardening recently!

Yes to getting this kind of value out of gardening! (I was surprised by this as I was a bit of a reluctant, assistant gardener.) Building, gardening, drawing, practicing handwriting, painting, poetry, sewing, this is a partial list of craft-like activities I find this kind of value in. Curious if there are other things that you (or others) would add to the list as potential activities to try out for anyone looking for more of this kind of value in their life?

A recent one for me is making and baking food. Most prominently I am deep into making my own pizza at home (phdpies.substack.com for details 🍕) but I’ve also been roasting my own coffee for years and also been dabbling in baking bread and croissants lately.

There’s something about the integration of mind and body that is just so rich (and delicious). And I also love that food is such a powerful tool for cultivating community.
